Eugene Mullan, Causeway founder and director has been appointed as a Belfast International Homecoming 2020 Ambassador. This recognises the work he has done on behalf of Causeway as a friend and advocate for Belfast.
The seventh annual Belfast International Homecoming – the largest gathering of the diaspora in the north of Ireland – will take place virtually, from 1-2 October 2020. The purpose is to welcome back the global family, to join in the discussion about building a better Belfast. The conference will reconnect Belfast with its far-flung diaspora to replace the loneliness of lockdown with the warm and virtual embrace of friendship. This year’s Homecoming will showcase ten inspirational leaders who have pivoted through the pandemic to come up with innovative ways of moving the community forward.
On being invited to become a Belfast International Homecoming Ambassador, Eugene said:
"As Northern Irish man living in Scotland, I am delighted to be have been invited to become a Belfast Homecoming Ambassador. Scotland has significant connections with Northern Ireland, with many students from Northern Ireland attending Scottish universities and going on to live, work and do business in Scotland. There are also many Northern Ireland based businesses working successfully in Scotland.
"Causeway has always recognised the importance of this connection, and in November 2018, Causeway held a Northern Ireland launch at Belfast City Hall to showcase our commitment to facilitating better connectivity, communication, cooperation and collaboration between business of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Eugene Mullan was born and raised in Belfast, studied architecture at Queen's University Belfast and is Director of Smith Scott Mullan Associates in Edinburgh. He is regularly in Belfast and Northern Ireland to visit family and friends. He will receive his medal at an online ceremony on Friday 2 October as the closing session of the conference.
Commenting on receiving the Medal at the Online Ceremony, Eugene added:
"Along with many of the other Belfast Homecoming Ambassadors, although I am sure we are all disappointed we are unable to gather together in person for the usual lavish banquet in Belfast City Hall, I am looking forward to toasting virtually with fellow Ambassadors, with a dram of Dead Rabbit Whiskey at the end of the celebration!"
