The NSPCC, National Society for the Prevention of cruelty to children is now 135 years old.  Many of you may well know us from the launch of Childline in 1985.  Last year our Childline service handled 200,000 counselling sessions from children who felt they had no-one else to turn to.  

A child calls Childline every 25 seconds and it costs just £4 to answer one call.   Every day 61 children tell us they are thinking of taking their own lives, every 7 minutes a sexual offence is committed against a child, every day 42 children want help to stop self-harming.

The NSPCC helpline responded to almost 55,000 contacts from adults concerned about the welfare of a child last year. The NSPCC helpline also offers advice to parents and our website provides excellent resources and parenting tips for all stages of a child's life, as well as advice on how to deal with difficult situations.

Our Speak Out Stay Safe programme is delivered via assemblies and are very interactive and age appropriate.

It helps children to:
Understand abuse in all its forms and recognise the signs of abuse
Know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse
Know how to get help, and find a trusted adult, and access the sources of help available to them, including our Childline Services.

The assemblies are delivered free to schools and cost the NSPCC £3 per pupil to deliver.  1 in 5 children in the UK have suffered abuse and our assemblies can be the lifeline for many children to stop abuse from happening and change their life.

Half a million children suffer abuse and neglect a year in the UK.  But there’s something we can all day to change that.

Listen up and learn a little with our Connect the DOTS training.  They’ll show you where to go if you need support, and how to speak up for children who need it.  Because that little bit of knowledge can help keep a lot of children safe.
