Born and now living in Donegal. Graduated from U.C.D. with a B.Soc.Sci 1986 and immediately embarked on a political career following my fathers death in 1986, being first co opted to Donegal County council in October 1986.

Elected to Dail Eireann in 1987 until 2011.

Minister for State at the Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht 2001-2002.

Minister for Social Welfare 2002-2004.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries 2004-2008.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment 2008-2010.

Minister for Education and Skills 2010-2011.

Tanaiste 2008-2011.

Since leaving politics I have been very involved in voluntary activity locally with charitable organisations and the G.A.A. In June 2016 I set up a consultancy company dealing mainly with Agriculture, Biodiversity and Transport.

I am currently a director of SITT Killybegs where we provide local transport solutions under Local Link.

Presently chairperson of the National local link network.

Chairperson of the expert advisory group to Gateway Organisation Sligo

A member of BITA Dublin board from 2015.
